Project Schizophrenia

“Schizophrenia is a severe long-term mental health condition. It causes a range of different psychological symptoms.
Doctors often describe schizophrenia as a type of psychosis. This means the person may not always be able to distinguish their own thoughts and ideas from reality.”

This is a project I was initially going to act at an audition, but once I expanded on my ideas it became something I wanted to give proper attention to, I decided I wanted to film it.

I have never done any videography before, this is my first, the piece was shot simultaneously from 3 different angles using 3 cameras. Some of the clips were performed separately, but the central piece was shot in one take.

The idea of the initial project was to raise awareness of Schizophrenia, I work in a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit and I often deal with people with Schizophrenia.
When I tell people what I do, I’m often greeted with rude assuming comments towards schizophrenia, the stigma very much still exists but people don’t seem to understand the battle that people are fighting in their heads. They are the same as you and I, just their brains work a little different, so stop judging them and villianising them.
So next time you laugh at someone in the street for talking to themselves, you better think twice because you don’t know their story.

I can never really portray how it truly horrific is inside someones mind with schizophrenia, I can only take what I’ve learnt and seen, I did once experience psychosis due to drug misuse but it was short lived. Everyones experience is different.

I try to depict how mental health destroys you from inside, your mind betrays you, it’s truly horrible what it does, and eventually your interior becomes your exterior, you begin to distrust yourself and often find yourself accompanied with delusional believes.

The black paint in this project is to signify the interior, your mind if you will, becoming your exterior, it changes who you are over time, I’ve seen people change drastically physically due to their mental wellbeing.

I had hoped that the finale, will leave you curious as to whether or not any of it really happened, because with schizophrenia you cannot always trust what you see.

Symptoms of schizophrenia

  • hallucinations – hearing or seeing things that don’t exist “
  • delusions – unusual beliefs not based on reality “
  • muddled thoughts based on hallucinations or delusions “
  • changes in behaviour

“Some people think schizophrenia causes a “split personality” or violent behaviour. This is not true.”

I don’t know if you’ll enjoy this, I hope you and I hope it’s up to good standard.

I spent nearly 2 months working on editing this, due to my laptop being old and slow now, I had to edit bit by bit very slowly.

I have to make huge shout out to http://boldbarbara.com for helping me out setting up the cameras and renting me a studio, I literally couldn’t have done it without her, go check out her stuff, she’s incredibly talented.

If you’re affected by any of the issues in this post, don’t hesitate to contact me.
